Our Venice Bedroom: A Slow-Progress Reveal

Cozy eclectic bedroom with a light wood bed, pink striped bedding, yellow lamps, and a carved wood armoire

A Cozy Eclectic Bedroom That Is Still Coming Together

We moved into this house about a year and a half ago and suddenly found ourselves with a bedroom twice the size (at least) of our previous one. The bedroom we had before barely even fit our bed, so we didn’t have any extraneous furniture. Once we moved to this house, we slowly started to gather additional pieces to fill out those empty corners, mostly through vintage Facebook Marketplace and estate sale finds, and turn it into the cozy eclectic bedroom it is today.

Now, our bedroom feels like a cozy escape. The wood plank vaulted ceiling, original hardwood floors, and large window looking into the trees do a lot of the heavy lifting. We just had to find the right accents to bring it all together. It’s layered, warm, and functional for what we need the room to be: a place where we can rest and unwind at the end of the day. I love seeing all the pieces that have traveled with us through multiple homes, as well as the new staples we found specifically for this room.

Keep reading for a full tour of the room, where everything is from, and how to create your own cozy eclectic bedroom with a collected, lived-in look that reflects who you are.

The Starting Point

The funny thing is that this room was not actually advertised as the primary bedroom when we first saw the rental listing. It was being used as a secondary living room by the previous tenants. This makes sense, since the room has large barn doors that open to the other living room and there is no closet, but we knew that we wanted to use this as our bedroom as soon as we saw it. We loved the soaring wooden ceilings and large window that lets in beautiful morning light.

Our bedroom before we moved in

This was what the room looked like before we moved in. It was a bit intimidating looking at the cavernous space and trying to picture how we would make it feel cozy. Our style has shifted somewhat over time and even since we moved to this house. I think your style is influenced by your surroundings. If you look at my previous posts (like my living room or dining room posts), we lived in a super bright Craftsman apartment and our style was more brightly colored midcentury modern. Since we’ve moved into this house, which is a Spanish style cottage, we’ve found ourselves drawn more toward muted, coquette pieces. This room reflects the evolution of our style, with pieces we’ve had for years (mostly the large furniture), mixed in with warm textiles and feminine touches.

The Bed: Where We Started

Cozy eclectic bedroom with a light wood spindle bed, pink striped bedding, and matching yellow table lamps
Layered bed pillows in pink, mustard velvet, and a fringed striped lumbar under a vaulted wood ceiling

Our bed frame is the IKEA BJÖRKSNÄS bed frame in birch, with the headboard pillows tied on. We’ve had this bed frame ever since we moved into our first apartment together six years ago and we still love it. It’s high-quality hardwood and has a classic spindle silhouette that suits many decor styles.

Our sheets are the Boll & Branch Percale Hemmed Sheet Set in Dusty Rose. I’ve had a set of these sheets in white for over four years and they remain a favorite. They have held up beautifully and remain very soft, so I added this Dusty Rose set to our wedding registry and we received them as a gift. Expensive but worth it. The duvet cover is the Maeve Brynne Stripe Tie Duvet Cover from Anthropologie, which was also a wedding gift. We tend to run hot in the warmer months, so I swap out our duvet insert (normally the IKEA FJÄLLARNIKA duvet insert) for this lightweight quilt from Hearth & Hand with Magnolia.

The mustard pillows are Rejuvenation Italian Velvet Pillow Covers with Pottery Barn down pillow inserts. The pink striped lumbar pillow is originally from HomeGoods, and this one is similar: dusty pink tufted stripe lumbar pillow cover on Etsy. The throw with mustard pom dots is also from HomeGoods. Here’s a similar one: mustard and white hand-woven cotton throw on Etsy. The pink gingham bed pillowcases are from The Company Store.

To get the layered look, we use four standard size bed pillows and three 16×24″ rectangular throw pillows. I find that this is the perfect amount that isn’t too cumbersome to toss off at night, but still makes a bed look inviting and comfortable.

Matching Nightstands and Playful Lamps

The nightstands are a vintage matching pair that we found on FB Marketplace from a midcentury furniture maker called L.A. Period Furniture. Similar modern version: West Elm Edie Nightstand. The pink floral lamps came from Target’s Pillowfort kids collection and are no longer available. I think this West Elm Emma Chamberlain Wooden Table Lamp has a similar playful feel.

The framed Alphonse Mucha prints (“Bières de la Meuse” and “Biscuits Lefèvre-Utile”) above either nightstand came from a little antique store we visited in Jerome, Arizona, a small former mining town. You can find prints on Fine Art America.

Our nightstands hold all our essentials: current reads, medicine, a HomePod, eye masks, etc.

The Antique Armoire and Painted Cabinet Corner

We bought this antique carved wooden armoire with slatted doors from Facebook Marketplace when we lived at our previous Venice house (which was super tiny) and needed more storage. It was listed at only $150 by a local Venice guy.

We paid him an extra $50 to deliver it and the funny thing is, when he arrived, his truck bed was empty. He thought we had quickly unloaded it, but turns out it had fallen off the truck into the middle of the road without him noticing! The good news is that someone had moved it into the median and it survived mostly unscathed, with just a small back piece broken off.

I find it interesting how the wood color almost exactly matches the wood ceilings in this room, even though we’d bought this before moving into this house. Funny how that works out! Since the one downside of this house is limited closet space, we use the armoire to store linens and travel items.

The Green Painted Cabinet

The green cabinet next to it was one we purchased when we realized that there was an awkward empty space next to the armoire that could be put to better use. It’s actually not vintage, but a contemporary piece made to look old that we found on FB Marketplace for $39. We store medicine and miscellaneous items inside. Here’s a similar one: Astoria Grand Woolridge 2-Door Accent Cabinet at Wayfair.

It’s styled on top with an inlaid wooden box I found at Goodwill years ago, a small stack of books, a candle, and the jade plant (similar terracotta pot with saucer: Bloomist Studio Planter in Whitewash). The black and white cactus print above it was a gift to Axel from a local Arizona artist he met through work.

Miffy, our blue mink Ragdoll cat, can never resist jumping into a photoshoot. Both our cats love to perch on the cabinet and armoire to observe us when we’re in this room.

A Cozy Reading Corner by the Window

Linen curtains on a black rod by a paned window with a vintage arrow floor lamp

The cane rocking chair is vintage, from an estate sale on our street. Unfortunately, you can’t really find these new. It is very delicate and the cane seat is tearing, so it’s only a display piece. The cool thing is that it folds in half for compact storage, which is useful when we rearrange our furniture to make room for a Christmas tree during the holidays.

The fiddle leaf fig is the easyplant Huge Fiddle Leaf Fig with the light wood stand. This planter is really neat: it has a water reservoir on the side that you fill, and it self-waters, making this a very low maintenance plant.

The curtains on the big window are the KOUFALL linen-textured blackout curtains on a black curtain rod with rectangle finials.

The arrow floor lamp is vintage, from Everything Goes, an antique store in Phoenix we love.

And the little framed art of a French girl over the rocking chair is from Stars Antique Market in Hermosa Beach, another antique store we love.

Plants Make a Cozy Bedroom

The huge fiddle leaf fig by the armoire came from Facebook Marketplace. We can’t resist a giant fiddle leaf fig under $50, so we have about five inside and outside. Some were even free “rescues” that we nursed back to life. That corner doesn’t get a ton of natural light, so it’s tricky to keep them healthy there. We move them around every once in a while.

The Rug and Textiles in Our Cozy Eclectic Bedroom

Our rug is similar to this Erica wool diamond trellis area rug. On the window behind the bed, we layered a white linen sheer curtain (similar, from Etsy) behind a sage green blackout curtain (also similar).

Textiles can really make a cozy eclectic bedroom feel cohesive if you stick to a coordinating color palette. The recurring colors in our home are pink, mustard, sage, and cream. Even with slightly mismatched tones, the overall look goes together and complements the warm wood in the room. I love how this room is feminine without being overly flowery.

What’s Next for Our Cozy Eclectic Bedroom

I want to swap out the art above the nightstands at some point. I prefer a more collected look and I’ve seen these prints a few places before, so I’m on the hunt for something more unique. Other than that, I feel like our cozy eclectic bedroom is pretty complete. It’s a wonderful space to retreat into each night, and I feel so lucky to wake up in this beautiful room each day.

Follow along as I continue this series! Next up, I’m updating my dining room post to show what we’re doing with the room in our current house. And tell me in the comments: what would you add to this room?
