Every year we make homemade holiday gifts, and for the past few years that has meant holiday cookie boxes for our families. They’re fun to put together, they look beautiful, and everyone gets a little bit of everything. Here’s what went in our most recent box, with links to every recipe.

What We Put in Our Holiday Cookie Box
1. Gingerbread With Chocolate Liqueur Glaze
A classic with a grown-up twist. Here’s the recipe.
2. Strawberry Matcha Neapolitan Cookies
My favorite of the batch. The layers look so pretty in a box. Here’s the recipe.
3. Cranberry Orange Shortbread
Buttery, festive, and sturdy enough to travel well. Here’s the recipe.
4. Pistachio Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies
These add great color to the box. Here’s the recipe.
5. Swedish Cardamom Buns
Not a cookie, but always a hit. I first tried cardamom buns at a little Swedish coffee shop in Kansas and have been making them ever since. Here’s the recipe I use.
6. Homemade Vanilla Bean Syrup
A small jar of vanilla bean syrup is an easy add-on for the coffee lovers in your life.
Tips for Making Holiday Cookie Boxes
- Mix textures and colors: something soft, something crisp, something with a pop of color.
- Choose cookies that hold up for a few days so they can be mailed or delivered.
- Bake doughs in advance and freeze them to spread out the work.
- Add one non-cookie item, like buns or syrup, to make the box feel special.
How to Package a Holiday Cookie Box
As for packaging, we always use cardboard cookie boxes with windows so you can see the goodies inside. I like these holiday-themed ones or these plain ones! I also like to include handwritten notecards listing what each item is, so people know what they’re eating. These colored index cards are my favorite.
